Sometimes Could is the past of can.
When we went into the house, we could smell something burning.
But we also use Could to talk about possible actions now or in the futher.
a:What would you like to do tonight?
b:We could go to the movies.(We will able to go to the movies tonight.)

*It's nice day. We could go for a walk.(We will able to go for a walk.)
I feel very difficult to use Could

You can use “could in both situations. :D
We could go out tonight.
He could have helped me with my homework.
