Would- Requests with modals

Post by Kim, Hae-lee » Thu Jul 15, 2004 10:57 am

Would you mind sharing a room?
Would you like me to come with you?
"Would" is a more polite form of will in requests and offers.

Would you mind ...ing?-> It means "Is it ok?"
Would you like...?-> used when offering something or inviting someone.

The answers to these questions are interesting because a positive answer might not have the word "would" in it:
Would you mind sharing a room?

Yeah, we could do that.
A negative answer would often have "would" (here I'd = I would):
Would you mind sharing a room?

Actually I'd rather have my own room.
