Let's Discuss Culture -- Jason M. Ham Introduction

Postby Jason M. Ham » Wed Sep 26, 2007 8:32 am

Hello, my name is Jason M. Ham. You can find my original introduction in the Introduce Yourself forum, but it's time I updated it a bit. Here goes:

Well, I do not teach English at Catholic University anymore; I teach at Inha University in Incheon. Check it out at http://eng.inha.ac.kr/.

I still have the B.A. in English lit from Gonzaga (at least I don't think it has expired yet... ) While I was studying there as an undergrad, it wasn't very famous, but these days you'll find its basketball team has really put it on the map.

Oh yeah--I bailed the online TESOL course and switched to an M.A. TESOL program at Sookmyung Women's University. I found out I was too lazy to study online and needed the added motivation of having an actual professor and classmates around me. Check it out if you are interested at http://sookmyung.ac.kr/~tesolma/zboard/zboard.php?id=tesolmacourse. It's a really intensive and rewarding program; the first semester is especially rigorous.

My hobbies are pretty much the same, although I don't get up to the mountains snowboarding nearly as much as I used to. I also changed football teams from the Han River Harriers to the Incheon Shooters. I still play defense--mostly center back, but occaisonally right or left back. You can see how we're doing in the Seoul Sunday Football League by going to http://ssflkorea.com/.

My three boys are growing up fast and staying healthy. I enjoy spending time with them at home playing legos, reading stories, and stuff like that. They really like to get out of the house and find spiders, go down slides, or play dinosaurs. My two older sons (4) are attending Sejong Kindergarten and learning to write Korean words these days, and my youngest boy (2)spends 5-6 hours a day at Coco Kid's Daycare where he is perfecting his Korean and social skills (hopefully). :)

Anyway, I'm excited to have so many cool people using this site to get some fluency practice and discuss apsects of culture that interest them. Feel free to browse around and reply to any posts that you like. If you have have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Either myself, James, or one of our moderators will be happy to give you quality input in English. This site is used by people from all four corners of the globe, so post a message or two, see if you can make contact with someone from another culture, and share your ideas and observations. as always, I really hope you enjoy using this site so much you forget that you're also practicing your English. :D

I apologize for the spam that shows up from time to time. Some of it is pretty bad. The site Administrator (James Trotta) and I periodically go through and delete most of it, but it tends to pile up when we get busy. Please ignore it. 8)

Check out my poll question at the top about movies. Vote and reply if you like...

Why See Movies?

Postby Jason M. Ham » Fri Oct 05, 2007 7:00 am

That's a great question. Why do people like movies so much? For me, I guess it's the ability to escape into another place where I know there are no real consequences in the real world. I can pretend to be someone I'm not, live through the characters, and forget my problems in real life. As soon as the lights go down, I "willingly suspend my disbelief" and enjoy the show. How about you other guys out there? Why do you like to see movies? 8)

Movie is a method that delivery someone's thinking to others.

movies gave relaxation to us

Postby Inha(11)ChoiHoJung » Tue Oct 09, 2007 5:18 am

Hi~guys~my name is choi hojung, freindly mates just call me'crazy chris'.
Also, I interest in all of movies. whatever OK without kids movies on under 6 years.
What is the purpose see a movie? In my case, just for relaxation.
on the other hand, some people say, Movies been gave culture trends and history affairs, something to us. It means we can got a few instruction or understanding to something(culture, law, history, idealogy).

How about you? Why are you see a movie?
just relaxation or got something?(like 'educational sides')
I think, all of them is correct. but I don't see a movie seriously.
If transformer were fun without firm story, it would be satisfied me.
D-war too. My first purpose is that get out from the stress of study.

Although something movie has good story and high quality, if it were bored, most people shouldn't see it.

Thank for read it. i hope, someone recommand good movies at me.kk
enjoy your time!! and please understand my short grammar....

"If only..."

Postby Inha(28)LeeHyunGue » Tue Oct 09, 2007 5:08 pm

I went to a movie called "If only" with my girl-friend last year.
That time, we were very angry each one.
But that movie gived us the lesson that 'love' is finite and very valued.
After movie ended, we promised prizeing each other.
(She was a student of Mr.Ham'class, name is called So-yung. Memory?^^)

Movie gives us the lesson that the fact is useful and valued.
If I was very angry, it make me calm,
if I was very depress, it make me grow restless.
I think movie make us happy.

Huh!~I did select wrong choice.

Postby Inha(53)KimJiHo » Wed Oct 17, 2007 9:38 am

When I have a chance to watch a movie with my friends, actually I don't classify the kind of movie, such as which genre will be better?, which actor I really like? something like this. So, I choose a movie very easily.

In this question, I selected an actually wrong choice. My best movie in 2007 was Transformer. It was really interesting!
It looked like fancy, such as Taegwan V(Korean Robert Animation), Mazingga(Robert Japanese Animation).

Anyway, nowadays nothing can be compared to Transformer as well.
It is wonderful.

movie's strong point

Postby inha(11) yundaemyoung » Wed Oct 17, 2007 10:12 am

Movie is thought that is indirectness experience.
Movie about part that we can not experience direction shows it to us.
So, even if we do not experience, some measure can expect.
Of course, it thought that give one another opinion although superintendence's ideas occupy many part.
And also, movie is thought that is good method ladle stress.

I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry

Postby Jason M. Ham » Thu Oct 18, 2007 1:09 am

Have you seen Adam Sandler's new comedy yet? It's called I Now Prounounce you Chuck and Larry and it's hilarious. Two straight guys end up getting married in order for one of them to be eligible for his pension. They have to start acting like they're gay so they don't get arrested and put in jail for fraud. Even Steve Buschemi makes an appearance! I laughed out loud--even the second time I saw it with my wife. Check it out for sure. If you see it, tell me if you think it's funny. Sometimes humor translates from one culture to another, but sometimes it doesn't. I'm curious.

Movie.

Postby Inha(25)Shinmugap » Mon Oct 29, 2007 1:31 am

I think that movie is fantastic because it is not a real world such as game.
I like game very much, so I think that we can understand a movie and a game have similar backgrounds.
That is they are not a real world, and we feel excited playing or watching a fantastic world.
