Small talk scenario: new employee in your office

Post by James Trotta » Mon May 01, 2017 1:28 pm

You are at a company barbecue outside your office. As you get on line for a drink, another person gets on line at the same time. The other person looks at you and says: "Hi, I just started here yesterday."

If you want to make small talk, what is an open-ended question you could ask that shows you are interested in the person? Please reply to this post with your question or questions. I will give you some feedback to let you know how well you do.

I like the greeting - just realize it's not a great small talk question - just a way to say hello: How are you doing so far?

Then this question could be good: What did you use to do in your old job?

But they might give you a one word answer like "Sales." What else can you ask them that will make them talk a little more?

I like the greeting: "Welcome to our office." is correct grammar.

I don't know if I understand this question: "Why are you here?" That might be too hard to answer - I'm here because I need a job, I'm here because I can't afford to retire... some honest answers could be embarrassing.

This is kind: "Is there anything I can help you with?" I like this question :D

Welcome in our company.
Are you American and how long you lived in this city?
I leave in this city gust few month and I not have a friends. I've lived here just a few months and don't have many friends.
Can I ask be my friend?! Can I ask you to be my friend?
What are you doing this weekend?
May be you can see whis me and go to the bar for dinner and to talk or dance? Maybe we can go out for dinner and dancing?
What is your favorite bar or restaurant?

 I think you can ask questions that make the other person think a little more. How long have you lived here needs only a short answer. But what do you like or dislike about living here could be more interesting.
