ODB 5 World Englishes

Post by Jason M. Ham » Wed Nov 02, 2011 12:55 pm

WEs
Jodi Crandall (University of Maryland)
World Englishes (WEs) refers to the recognition of the global spread of English and the maintenance of different local or national varieties of English
People use different varieties of English all around the world, but the underlying structure remains the same.
The vocabulary or pragmatics (the way in which it is used) changes.

What does this mean for teaching English language and culture in the classroom?
Whose English should we teach?
Which English should Korean students be learning?
